Turning 27: 27 Lessons That Shaped My Journey

Become a Better Writer in 6 Sec, Sell Without Being Salesy, and Get Jacked — All at Once.

1 Meditation

I woke up at 2:30 am and spent the day writing, thinking and enjoying some peace and quiet in the middle of nowhere.

It was therapeutic af and gave me time to reflect on a couple of things: persistence and taking action. Fast.

On Wednesday, during my weekly Power Hour with Björn discussing strategy for Saints College, I kept thinking about the fine line between strategising and procrastinating.

Too much strategising = procrastinating.

Too much procrastinating = fear of failing.

The solution?

Taking fast action with a Minimally Viable Plan and learning as you go.

This ties into the idea of persistence — staying in the game long enough to see results.

Or, in the case of a surfing analogy I shared with Saints College a few days ago…

Staying in the water long enough to catch waves.

When you’re out in the ocean waiting for waves, you catch them when they come and enjoy the ride.

That’s like growing an audience or building a skill — you grow while you’re riding the waves.

But the ocean isn’t always wavy.

It’s often flat.

And during those times, you’re not growing.

Your posts might not be getting reach, or you’re not improving in your job or at the gym.

This is the hardest part because you ruminate and overthink everything.

Most people quit at this point and get out of the water.

But here’s the thing:

  • The moment you get out is the moment you quit and guarantee missing future waves.

  • And the moment you quit is the moment you fail.

The inverse is true.

Growth is guaranteed if you train your mind and stay in the water long enough to succeed.

7 Learnings

How to Make Your Competition Irrelevant (070924)

→ Use the Blue Ocean Strategy.

  • Red oceans: existing markets where competition is fierce, sharks eat sharks and the water’s bloody red as a result.

  • Blue oceans: new markets where there’s no competition.

The Blue Ocean Strategy involves swimming from a red ocean to a blue ocean by creating new demand.

Algorithms Reflect Reality (080924)

A social media algorithm is like a teddy bear’s shadow on a wall.

  • The shadow might look like a couple flat circles.

    • (the reflection of reality)

  • But the real teddy bear is soft, fluffy and has a cute button nose.

    • (reality itself; perhaps not so cute)

Social media algorithms show us simple online pictures of complex real-world things.

The 3 Ingredients of Masterful Storytelling (090924)

  1. Intention — what they want.

  2. Obstacle — what gets in the way of what they want.

  3. Stakes — what happens if they don’t get what they want.

e.g. Harry Potter wants to live. Voldemort gets in the way. If Harry doesn’t get what he wants, he dies.Source: How To Master Storytelling

Become a Better Writer in 6 Seconds (100924)

Begin with the end in mind.

Get clear on these 3 things before you start writing:

  1. Emotion: what do you want readers to feel?

  2. Takeaway: what do you want readers to remember?

  3. Action: what do you want readers to do?

The 3 Elements of a Blue Ocean Strategy (110924)

  1. Focus: go all-in on 1 customer avatar, 1 platform, 1 offer.

  2. Divergence: offer benefits not found in a red ocean to create a unique brand and increase customer loyalty.

  3. Tagline: create a memorable phrase that captures the brand’s essence.

→ Why compete in a red ocean when you can create a blue one?

How to Sell Without Being Salesy (120924)

Future pacing.

  • Ask thought-provoking questions about the person’s future and what it would look like if they continued down the path they’re on without solving their problem.

    • Help potential clients visualise the consequences of not solving their problems.

Examples:

  • What will your life be like if you don’t ___?

  • What’s going to be the impact on ___ if you don’t ___?

  • What’s going to happen to ___ in the next 3-6 months?

The Perfect Training Frequency for Muscle Building (130924)

  • Beginner: 1X per week per muscle group.

  • Intermediate: 2X per week per muscle group.

    • The goldilocks zone.

  • Pro: 3-4X per week per muscle group.

    • Lots of diminishing returns once you start training a muscle group more than 2X per week.

    • Not necessary for 99% of people.
